Introducing internationally bestselling author Bolu Babalola’s dazzling debut novel, full of passion, humor, and heart, that centers on a young Black British woman who has no interest in love and unexpectedly finds herself caught up in a fake relationship with the man she warned her girls about
Sweet like plantain, hot like pepper. They taste the best when together...
Sharp-tongued (and secretly soft-hearted) Kiki Banjo has just made a huge mistake. As an expert in relationship-evasion and the host of the popular student radio show Brown Sugar, she’s made it her mission to make sure the women of the African-Caribbean Society at Whitewell University do not fall into the mess of “situationships”, players, and heartbreak. But when the Queen of the Unbothered kisses Malakai Korede, the guy she just publicly denounced as “The Wastemen of Whitewell,” in front of every Blackwellian on campus, she finds her show on the brink.
They’re soon embroiled in a fake relationship to try and salvage their reputations and save their futures. Kiki has never surrendered her heart before, and a player like Malakai won’t be the one to change that, no matter how charming he is or how electric their connection feels. But surprisingly entertaining study sessions and intimate, late-night talks at old-fashioned diners force Kiki to look beyond her own presumptions. Is she ready to open herself up to something deeper?
A gloriously funny and sparkling debut novel, Honey and Spice is full of delicious tension and romantic intrigue that will make you weak at the knees.
"A smart, sexy summer read, which hits your brain and your romance buttons in one shot." — Los Angeles Times
"The ultimate summer romance . . . It’s got all the juiciest, most satisfying romance tropes, but in Babalola’s capable hands, the story feels fresh and unique." — The Cut, New York magazine
“Divine summer reading. Hilarious, hot, and heartfelt. ” — Meg Cabot, #1 New York Times bestselling author
Editor's Note
Wit, vulnerability, and charm…
Babalola’s (“Love in Color”) romance debut is full of wit and vulnerability. Kiki Banjo, a British Nigerian student at Whitewell College, is more interested in doling out love advice on her radio show “Brown Sugar” than experiencing love herself. She’s quick to disparage Malakai Korede, a smug recent transfer, to her listeners. But when the two form a fake relationship that’s mutually beneficial, the resulting attention (and Malakai’s charm) force Kiki to reevaluate her guarded heart.

- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This book was really good to listen to, but I felt like the ending was a bit rushed
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5O my goodness I love the writing and the storytelling. Although I'm not in college, there is something beautiful about being able to capture the young love of Kiki and Kai.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Love is real and this book proved that. This story was so thoughtfully developed and the characters brimming with life. It had me giggling and twirling my hair at work. This is definitely a new all time favorite.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A slow realization of love, loved both their development! ?
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I thoroughly enjoyed this and couldn't put it down till I got to the end. For a debut, Bolu Babalola outdid herself and I'm now very curious about subsequent books. Weruche Opia read it beautifully (save for the murder of some Yoruba words) and I believed every word.
It's not my typical genre so I'm really happy that it turned out to be a really beautiful albeit slightly corny read/listen. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Amazing honestly and respect to the author and the voice actress I was on my toes the whole time.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This was sooo great! What a gem. I wish there was more.. I'm not ready to leave all these wonderful deep spicy heart of gold characters...
The writing is ace. Such beautiful play of language, like dancing.
The narration - exceptional. So very well done. I am grateful for the wild sweet and bold ride of this book! - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I will still write a comprehensive review of this book, but till then, let's say a few things.
First of all, I love the language the author employs in the book. I listened to the audiobook version, and I really enjoyed Weruche's tone and voice when she says things like 'you're moving mad.'
This is a beautiful Romcom, a fake dating trope, but it's beautiful regardless. I love how the author describes love, and how she paints it to be a cute image. And I love the fact that Kiki gets to experience true love for once, even if it started as a fake dating. - Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/54.5 stars. Shy of .5 because of the overly descriptive nature. I loved it!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5So good! Enjoyed every minute. Looking forward to next book.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Really gave Dear White People vibes in the beginning in a good way. Love Keke and Kai's relationship progression where even though the relationship was fake everything about it was honest from the beginning. Also felt that the story was truly authentic in its setting and characters. Just a lovely read.

- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I must say the writing has my both reflecting, laughing, and full on joy. I loved all the characters and their growth. It is impressive to capture black romance in a light that both reflect culture and interest in the western media. A melting pot of ideas an mindset. Th coming together of women through honesty and vulnerability. What a read!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I fell in love with Kiki and Kai.... heck , the whole girl squad. Beautifully and skillfully written, perfect balance of african culture and language.
- Rating: 3 out of 5 stars3/5The narrator was great but I felt like this story was more suitable for young adults in their early 20's. It was predictable but cute.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5OH WOW‼️ “Honey and Spice” is a well written novel by Bolu Babalola. This was my first book from this author..and a delightful read too‼️ Thereafter, I appreciated (empathize) the social political commentaries/dramas of “chocolate people” navigating campus life; enjoyed the friendship of Kiki and Amina as well as the frenemy-banter between Malakai and Kiki. Yes there where a few cultural obscurities. But nothing offense and or so ambiguous that would interfere with completing this novel. I applaud the narrator Weruche Opie on a superb performance ??????‼️ I’m looking forward to other projects from both Ms. Babalola and Ms. Opie.
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5I loved the prose, it was an interesting read. The narrator was the best for me
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I thoroughly enjoyed the romance plot, the drama and twists, but I what I enjoyed the most was learning about another culture, their traditions and how people can come together put differences aside for the common good. Thank you.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A girl power romance it was so fun to read!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5A great read! Told my friends to hop on and read it also!
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5I really don’t have words for how much I loved this book! The narrator was amazing too, I felt so immersed like I was living alongside these characters.
- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5This book was EVERYTHING! Great story, great characters! Pure perfection!
